Service providers are facing a transitional period in their access networks. Traditional TDM interfaces aren’t going away, yet there exists an ever-growing need to also support and deliver Ethernet. This requirement to incorporate Ethernet may manifest itself externally through customer requests for Ethernet transport services, or it may be driven internally by the need to streamline rollouts of new revenue-generating IP services, such as video and internet access.

The need for TDM and Ethernet can been seen at network aggregation points such as central offices, POPs, Remote cabinets, cell sites, and colocation sites that require TDM/PDH interface to support legacy voice and data services, along with the need for 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet and 10 GbE interfaces for new packet-based services.

To support Ethernet and TDM access, a service provider has two fundamental options; build and maintain two separate networks - one for Ethernet and one for TDM, or transition to an integrated Ethernet/TDM network based upon the widely deployed SONET/SDH infrastructure and Ethernet over SONET/SDH (EoS). The latter option is an integrated approach offers several benefits, including:
