FORCE10 NETWORKS CHIEF SECURITY SCIENTIST DISCUSSES BEST PRACTICES FOR SECURING AND MONITORING HIGH PERFORMANCE NETWORKS
SAN JOSE, Calif., Febuary 15, 2007 –Monitoring traffic on high performance networks is a complex task that requires both scalability and flexibility at the software level, Livio Ricciulli, chief security scientist at Force10 Networks® said during the Internet2 Joint Techs workshop in Minneapolis. Open source software such as Snort and Sguil can help provide comprehensive protection against attacks as well as ensure scalability at higher network speeds.
“Architecting security at high speeds demands new frameworks, especially in terms of how to combine hardware and software into a flexible and scalable platform that can monitor and inspect traffic at 10 Gigabit speeds without compromising the performance of the network,” said Ricciulli at the gathering of industry innovators. “Open source software has been rigorously tested and refined throughout a community of programmers and specialists to provide superior detection and monitoring capabilities that can scale to high speeds.”
The large Snort community has developed a comprehensive suite of intrusion detection and prevention tools that have been vetted by hundreds of contributors and programmers and thousands of users. With a large and devoted customer base, Snort has become the most widely deployed intrusion prevention technology in the world. Through its community-based roots, Snort has evolved into a mature, feature rich technology that is uniquely able to meet the rigorous demands of securing high speed networks.
“The security space is particularly suited for open source communities like Snort and Sguil where thousands of programmers can focus on solving problems in code or developing new rules to prevent the latest attacks,” said Ricciulli. “Additionally, open source code provides a higher level of transparency into the inspection and monitoring of traffic on the network, which is essential for troubleshooting and reporting, particularly at 10 Gigabit speeds.”
The Force10 P-Series security appliances are the only in the industry to monitor, inspect and block traffic at line-rate 10 Gigabits per second. The P-Series leverages the open source Snort software to provide comprehensive inspection and monitoring tools that can scale to 10 Gigabit speeds.
