TURIN'S TRAVERSE® BECOMES THE INDUSTRY'S FIRST PLATFORM TO SUPPORT THE FULL ARRAY OF MEF CERTIFIED CARRIER ETHERNET SERVICES, SONET AND SDH
Turin’s Multiservice Transport Switch Becomes the Industry’s First Platform to Support the Full Array of MEF Certified Carrier Ethernet Services, SONET, and SDH
Las Vegas (TelecomNEXT), March 21, 2006 - Turin Networks, a global provider of multiservice optical transport products for carrier, wireless and private networks, announced today that the recently-launched Next Generation Ethernet (NGE) Modules for the company’s flagship Traverse® Multiservice Transport Switch have successfully completed the Metro Ethernet Forum's (MEF) service conformance tests for Carrier Ethernet. By achieving certified compliance with the Ethernet Private Line (EPL), Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL) and E-LAN (Ethernet multipoint-to-multipoint) services defined by the MEF 9 technical specifications, the Traverse platform becomes the first product in the industry to support the full array of MEF Carrier Ethernet services, at both 10/100 and 1,000 Mbps rates, in addition to SONET and SDH transport services.
“There is a definite requirement, from established network operators in particular, for transitionary platforms that bridge the chasm between SONET/SDH and Carrier Ethernet,” said Scott Clavenna, Chief Analyst at Heavy Reading. “Products that support this transition will be well positioned for network operators migrating their legacy networks towards a packet-optimized infrastructure focused on new IP-based access services such as Ethernet VPNs, and IPTV, in addition to existing TDM services.”
The Certification Program is a key step for the MEF in its mission to facilitate the provision of consistent Carrier Ethernet services worldwide. It is designed to provide network operators assurances that different vendors' equipment complies with essential Carrier Ethernet specifications, thereby reducing the need to perform testing in their own labs, and, ultimately, to accelerate Carrier Ethernet deployments. To demonstrate conformance, Turin was required to undergo more than 260 stringent tests, conducted by Iometrix on behalf of the MEF, in accordance with the approved ”Test Plan for Ethernet Services at the UNI”. Turin successfully passed all mandatory test cases, and the vast majority of the optional test cases, in less than two days.
“This certification from the MEF is an important part of the migration path for our Traverse platform,” said Colm O’Brien, Vice President of Product Line Management for Turin Networks. “Our goal is to provide a single platform that addresses current SONET/SDH networking needs while also delivering an evolution to packet as cost-effectively as possible.”
