HUMAN GENOME SEQUENCING CENTER AT BAYLOR COLLEGE OF MEDICINE DEPLOYS FORCE10 TERASCALE E-SERIES TO INCREASE NETWORK SCALABILITY

MILPITAS, Calif., October 11, 2005 — Force10 Networks today announced that the Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC) at Baylor College of Medicine has deployed the Force10 TeraScale E-Series to build reliable scalability into its network and speed the processing of complex genome data. With the TeraScale E1200, HGSC is laying the foundation for a resilient, high performance network that will grow exponentially over the next several years.

“Every day our scientists are processing massive amounts of data to support their research,” said David Parker, manager of systems at the Human Genome Sequencing Center. “The TeraScale E-Series delivers the scalability and resiliency we need to support further scientific research, ensuring that the network does not limit the scope of scientific research.”

The TeraScale E1200 interconnects HGSC’s storage facilities and research clusters, providing the resiliency and density that allows scientists to fully utilize their computing resources. With the Force10 TeraScale E1200, HGSC is building in the scalability it needs to expand its network from 100 nodes to 300 and possibly even 1,000 nodes in the future. The built-in resiliency of the TeraScale E-Series ensures that scientists studying the human genome, leukemia, epilepsy and a diverse range of other subjects have nonstop access to the network.

Baylor College of Medicine is home to the Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC), one of three large scale genome sequencing centers in the U.S. Today, the HGSC performs in one day the same amount of DNA sequencing that would have taken a month to complete in 1998. With 77 genome sequencing machines running all the time, the HGSC required the reliable performance and maximum network uptime that the Force10 TeraScale E-Series delivers.

“The Human Genome Sequencing Center is on the cutting edge of medical research and human genome mapping, requiring a high performance network infrastructure that speeds research and processing rather than hinders it,” said Stephen Garrison, vice president of corporate marketing at Force10 Networks. “The Force10 TeraScale E-Series delivers the combination of performance and long-term scalability HGSC needs to continue its advanced research.”

The College has total research support exceeding $401.5 million with $340 million from federal sources, and the National Science Foundation ranks it first among all U.S. colleges and universities for research expenditures in biological science.
