SRS SAKURA INTERNET DEPLOYS FORCE10 E-SERIES IN JAPAN’S FASTEST NETWORK TO INCREASE RESILIENCY

MILPITAS, Calif., November 3, 2004 — Force10 Networks, the pioneer in 10 Gigabit Ethernet switching and routing, today announced that Japanese service and content provider SRS Sakura Internet has deployed the E-Series to build a reliable line-rate 10 Gigabit Ethernet infrastructure. The Force10 E600 increases network reliability and security for greater performance predictability, enabling Sakura to deliver new high quality services to its growing customer base.

“With demand for broadband increasing across Japan and repeated calls for advanced services, we needed to upgrade our existing network equipment, which could not provide line-rate 10 Gigabit throughput,” said Ken Washikita, director of technology at Sakura. “We turned to Force10, who provided us with the performance, security and reliability we needed to ensure that our network is both Japan’s fastest and its most resilient.”

With the Force10 E600 at the heart of its network, Sakura gains the robust routing protocols and priority and traffic controls it needs to deliver its data center, dedicated server, hosting and distributed Internet exchange (DIX) services. Line-rate 10 Gigabit throughput and built-in resiliency combine with Force10’s Dynamic Security Suite to protect Sakura’s network against denial of service attacks, sharply limiting the management and productivity costs associated with the disruptive attacks. An in-depth case study of the Sakura deployment is available at www.force10networks.com/applications/profiles.asp.

“Driven chiefly by low prices, Japan’s broadband adoption rates have skyrocketed over the last few years, requiring service providers like Sakura to upgrade their networks,” said Stephen Garrison, vice president of corporate marketing for Force10 Networks. “The Force10 E-Series enables service providers to not only add capacity but also to introduce a new level of resiliency that increases overall network performance.”

According to Japan’s Ministry of Home Management, Public Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications, the number of broadband subscribers in Japan increased from 7.8 million in 2002 to 14.95 million at in March 2004. The Ministry estimates that broadband subscribers will increase to 59.7 million by 2007. As broadband subscriber rates grow and fiber to the home, which is projected to have more than 10 million subscribers by the end of 2005, reaches widespread adoption, the need for additional network capacity will increase. Recently, BIGLOBE, NTT-ME and Japan Cablenet deployed the Force10 E-Series to upgrade their networks to 10 Gigabit Ethernet.

The Force10 TeraScale E-Series combines unprecedented Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet densities with best-in-class resiliency to provide a new level of predictable performance and scalability. Leveraging three distinct processing units for switching, routing and management functionality, the Force10 architecture enables the TeraScale E-Series to reliably deliver line-rate Gigabit and 10 Gigabit throughput across all ports regardless of traffic conditions.
