FORCE10 NETWORKS DEMONSTRATES 10 GIGABIT ETHERNET AT SC2001 CONFERENCE

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory wins the “Network Bandwidth Challenge” by leveraging 10 Gigabit Ethernet from Force10 Networks.

DENVER, Colo., November 16, 2001 — Force10 Networks, Inc., a leading developer of 10 Gigabit Ethernet switching/routing equipment, today announced a 10 Gigabit Ethernet demonstration with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) at SC2001, the annual conference of high-performance computing and networking held this week in Denver. The use of 10 Gigabit Ethernet enabled LBNL to win the Network Bandwidth Challenge, an event in which researchers with high-bandwidth applications were invited to push the network infrastructure to its limits and move the most data across the network.

“The 10 Gigabit Ethernet solution from Force10 worked perfectly,” said Michael Bennett, Deputy LBLnet Services Group Leader. “Winning the Network Bandwidth Challenge was very important to us, and we couldn’t have done it without Force10.”

During the SC2001 Network Bandwidth Challenge, teams of researchers from around the world used SCinet, the conference fiber-optic network, to demonstrate applications using huge amounts of distributed data. The winning application from LBNL was a live visualization of a simulation of colliding black holes. Force10 provided the equipment to deliver the 10 Gigabit Ethernet connection between the LBNL booth and the SCinet network.
